Excursion

Sunday 22 Sept

We are organising an optional excursion on Sunday, Sept. 22 to see one of the UNESCO World heritages — the Dolomites. Prepare, since we are going to climb up the Catinaccio (it) / Rosengarten (de) massif. But do not be afraid of the steep mountains. Our idea is to offer you a comfortable, guided hike with absolutely breathtaking views. The duration of the excursion is 2h30min circa. Detailed information is provided below. Feel free to contact us in case you have questions.

Plan

• Meet at 13:00 at the main bus station, 15-20 mins walk from the conference venue (map: https://goo.gl/maps/C9xjEaKcSgUFaQsy5). The group will be leaving at 12:40 from the university right after the lunch buffet;
• Take a shuttle to Paolina chairlift in Carezza (it) / Karersee (de): map; estimated arrival time: 14:00.
• Take the lift to rifugio Paolina (it) / Paolina Hütte (de) and hike towards rifugio Fronza Alle Coronelle (it) / Kölner Hütte (de).
• Take the König Laurin lift down to the valley.
• Take a shuttle back to Bolzano at 17:30. This way we will be on time for the social dinner.

Cost
The shuttle costs will be covered by the school organisation committee. However, those volunteering for the hike will be asked to pay additional 14€ — the cost of the chairlifts.

Weather
Since the hike is going to take place at an altitude of more than 2K meters, the temperature is expected to be from 8° to 15°.

Cable lifts
The duration of each ride is 10 min circa. If you are afraid of heights, please consider that we are going to take chairlifts, that is, with your legs hanging freely.

Equipment
Comfortable shoes with good grip are recommended. Hikers should bring their own water and, if needed, a snack. We are not planning to stop at any hut.

Bad weather
In case of bad weather, the backup plan is to visti the Roncolo (it) /Runkelstein (de) castle, which is easily reachable from Bolzano, on foot or by public transport. In this case we will not provide any shuttle. You will need to pay the entrance ticket of 8€, with possibly extra 2.70€ for a guide. A single bus ride costs 1.50€.
